Discord has confirmed that user data was stolen after hackers breached a third-party customer support service provider, exposing information belonging to users who contacted its support team.
Discord’s core systems were not directly impacted by the hackers; however, personal data such as full names, usernames, email addresses, and IP addresses were leaked. Also, emails between customers and support, as well as some limited information about payment methods (type and part of the card), were disclosed. After the incident, the attackers allegedly tried to blackmail the company.
The incident reveals the continuing vulnerability of outsourcing service providers and underlines the necessity of imposing more stringent security controls on vendors in major digital platforms.
